The matchup between two Mid-State Athletic Conference teams produced a thrilling contest which featured a tied score on four different occasions. The Hornets led by as many as 10 points and the Cougars grew their lead to as many as nine.
SUNY Broome shot 50% from the field in the first quarter and held Genesee to 20% from the field in jumping out to a 17-10 lead. The Cougars put up 17 points of their own in the second quarter, but the Hornets still held a narrow 29-27 lead at halftime.
Genesee opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to surge ahead 34-29. The Hornets quickly cut the lead to two before Genesee used a 10-3 run to reach its largest lead of nine points, 46-37. SUNY Broome held the Cougars scoreless for the final three minutes of the quarter and minimized the Cougars' lead to three with 32 seconds left. The Hornets missed a three-pointer with eight seconds left in the quarter which would have sent the contest into the fourth with a 46-46 tie.
Still down by three at the start of the final quarter, SUNY Broome trailed for all of the fourth but continued to keep the Cougars within reach. With under two minutes to play, the Hornets set up for one last rally. A jumper at the 1:56 mark brought SUNY Broome within two and a trip to the free throw line with 1:16 left presented an opportunity for the Hornets to tie the game. SUNY Broome ultimately drew within one, 56-55.
After Genesee went back up by three with 46 seconds left, SUNY Broome missed a jumper with 35 seconds left, stole the ball on the next Genesee possession, but then turned it back over to the Cougars with 28 seconds to go. After a timeout, Genesee ran 16 seconds off the clock before SUNY Broome fouled with 12 seconds left. Another foul at the 10 second mark sent the Cougars to the foul line where both shots were missed.
A SUNY Broome timeout following the second miss set up its final possession with 10 seconds on the clock. An initial three-point look from the top of the key was off the mark, but an offensive rebound and a kick out to the corner gave the Hornets a final chance at a game-tying three. The excellent look from the corner just missed off the rim as Genesee held on.
Zephora Brouillette turned in a season-best game with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Juliana Turner also notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Adrianna Finta had five points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals, just missing the first of two game-tying attempts. Nnyala Stark had eight points and six rebounds, just missing the second game-tying three-point attempt. Khadhija Randall scored five points and had seven rebounds, three assists, and seven steals. Riley McNamara provided a big 10 points off the bench.
SUNY Broome fell to 4-14 with the loss.
