The women's basketball team was down by double digits in the second half before turning on a massive comeback, but ultimately dropped its season opener 60-58 to Corning CC.
After an even opening to the first quarter, Corning used a late run to take a four-point advantage into the second quarter. The Red Barons continued to slightly outscore the Hornets in the second quarter and held a 30-22 lead at halftime.
After trailing by double digits midway through the third quarter, SUNY Broome went on a run late to shorten the deficit with a 15-point effort in the third. This furious comeback only strengthened in the fourth quarter when the Hornets scored 21 points in the quarter.
SUNY Broome cut the deficit to five with just under two minutes to play. A layup by Maggie Burlison with just under 10 seconds left then trimmed the Corning lead to just four points. An offensive foul by the Red Barons on the ensuing inbound gifted the ball back to SUNY Broome under its own basket, which set up a two-point jumper from Khadhija Randall to cut the lead to two points with five seconds left.
Corning made one of two free throws after being fouled on its ensuing inbound, but Burlison was fouled and sent to the free throw line after corralling the defensive rebound. Down by three, Burlison made both free throws. Corning was sent back to the free throw line with two seconds remaining and a one-point advantage and again made one of two. Julia Deyo's half-court heave upon pulling down the rebound was off the mark and the Hornets came up just short.
Adrianna Finta led the Hornets in points with 21 and added seven rebounds. Burlison had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Randall had eight points while Delana Baldwin-Rhodes added seven points and six rebounds.
SUNY Broome will play two games in a row on the road this weekend, visiting SUNY Adirondack on Saturday and Hudson Valley CC on Sunday.
