Baseball Falls To #4 Hudson Valley

The SUNY Broome baseball team battled nationally-ranked #4 Hudson Valley CC for several competitive stretches in a doubleheader on April 14, but was ultimately swept.
The Vikings prevailed 12-7 in seven innings in the first contest and won the second contest 9-1, which was stopped due to rain once the meeting had finished the 5th inning and could therefore be ruled a complete game.
Hudson Valley improved to 20-0 on the season with the two wins. SUNY Broome dropped to 5-17.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 7, #4 Hudson Valley 12
After a scoreless first inning, the visiting Vikings used three runs in the top of the 2nd and six runs in the top of the 3rd to take an early 9-0 lead. SUNY Broome responded with five runs in the bottom of the 3rd to trim the deficit. However, Hudson Valley plated three more runs over the next three innings and the Hornets added just one, so the game was still significantly in the Vikings' favor at 12-6 headed into the 7th. The Hornets added one in the final inning but could not challenge any further.
Emmanuel Aponte-Cardozo pitched the first two innings for the Hornets, allowing one hit, three runs, and three walks. Vernon Stevens came in next and allowed four runs and then Evan Persbacker surrendered three runs in an inning of work. Ethan Flagg finished the rest of the game for the Hornets with a competitive performance which kept SUNY Broome in the game. Across 4.0 innings, he allowed two runs and two walks, and struck out three.
Much of the offensive production came from the top half of the Hornets' lineup. Leadoff hitter Kaiden Cannistra was 1-2 with two walks, a run, and an RBI. Santino Michitti was 1-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Carmelo Alessandro was 2-3 with a run and two RBI. Cade Raleigh was 2-3 with two RBI.
As a team defensively, SUNY Broome allowed nine hits and committed one error. As a team offensively, the Hornets collected six hits, generated three walks, and struck out seven times.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 1, #4 Hudson Valley 9
A narrow 2-1 Hudson Valley lead exploded into an 8-1 lead after the Vikings plated six runs in the top of the 3rd. They struck again for their ninth run of the game in the 4th. After getting on the board in the 1st, SUNY Broome was held scoreless the rest of the way. Once the fifth inning was completed and the contest could be officially scored as a completed game, the matchup was called due to ongoing rain.
Zechariah Clouston started on the mound and allowed seven hits and four earned runs with a strikeout over 2.1 innings. Brady Blair relieved the other 2.2 innings and surrendered three hits, three runs, and one walk, while striking out three.
Facing a dominant pitching performance from Hudson Valley, the Hornets did not register a hit. After reaching first base on a leadoff walk, Cannistra stole second and third and then scored on an error for the Hornets' only run back in the 1st. The Hudson Valley hurler had just one walk against seven strikeouts and faced just 18 batters over the five innings.
SUNY Broome allowed 10 Hudson Valley hits and committed three errors in the game.
