Baseball Swept By #13 Cayuga

The first leg of the doubleheader resulted in a 12-0 final after seven innings while the second leg ended after five innings with a 13-1 final.
With the two losses, SUNY Broome's record this season moves to 2-8. The Hornets have played eight games vs NJCAA Region 3 opponents and now sit at 2-6 in Region 3 play. Sunday's games vs Cayuga were the first contests against a conference opponent, so SUNY Broome is 0-2 in Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) play.
Next up on the season itinerary is another doubleheader with Cayuga, this time on the road. That twinbill is slated for Thursday, April 2 with first pitch times of 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 0, #13 Cayuga 12
The visiting Spartans asserted themselves early by plating five runs in the first inning. Cayuga continued to score consistently throughout the rest of the contest, plating a run in the 3rd, two in the 4th, one in the 6th, and three in the 7th. The Spartans had 14 hits and made two errors while SUNY Broome was held to two hits and committed one error.
Luke Grassi made his fourth start of the season and received the loss. In four starts, Grassi has pitched to an 0-3 record with a no decision in the other start. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed six hits and six runs, walking three and striking out three.
Evan Persbacker pitched 1/3 of an inning in relief and allowed a hit and a walk. Brady Mazur came into the game in the top of the 4th and allowed two hits, two runs, and two walks in an inning of relief.
Emmanuel Aponte-Cardozo allowed one hit and one unearned run in two innings. Gregory Inserillo pitched the final inning and allowed four hits and three runs and logged a strikeout.
Offensively, Kaiden Cannistra and Darlyn De Los Angeles logged the only two hits for SUNY Broome. De Los Angeles' hit was a double. The Hornets did draw four walks- one each by Zechariah Clouston, Cade Raleigh, Bailey O'Connor, and Cameron Koske.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 1, #13 Cayuga 13
The score of the second game remained close after one inning with Cayuga holding a 3-1 advantage. The Spartans then held SUNY Broome scoreless the rest of the way and added 10 straight runs to pull away for the victory. A six-run top of the 5th put the game out of reach for good. Cayuga had 14 hits again and SUNY Broome logged three, while committing two errors.
Peter Cruz was on the bump for the second leg and went four innings, taking his first loss of the season. He allowed 10 hits and six earned runs, walking one and striking out two. Thomas Reis Jr. and Vernon Stevens combined to cover the top of the 5th in relief. Reis Jr. went 1/3 of the inning and allowed four hits, five earned runs, and three walks. Stevens pitched 2/3 of the inning and got a strikeout.
Cannistra went 1-2 with a walk and scored the lone SUNY Broome run. De Los Angeles was 1-2. Carmelo Alessandro logged a hit and stole a base. Alex Lamoreaux drew a walk.
