The SUNY Broome baseball team visited Herkimer College for a doubleheader on April 12 and was defeated in both games.
The Hornets lost the first contest 14-8 in seven innings and dropped the second game 13-3 after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
With the two losses, SUNY Broome fell to 5-15 on the season.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 8, Herkimer 14
With five runs in the 1st and two more in the 2nd, the Generals quickly took control of the opening contest, leading 7-1 after three innings. Herkimer added two more in the 4th to go up by eight runs. The Hornets made it interesting with a 5-run top of the 5th to cut the lead to 9-6, but then the teams began trading runs. Herkimer scored two in the bottom of the 5th and three in the bottom of the 6th. SUNY Broome plated two in the top of the 7th but could not finish the big comeback.
Brady Blair started the contest for SUNY Broome and allowed one hit, five runs, and five walks, striking out two. Evan Persbacker pitched the next 1.2 innings and did not allow an earned run. Alex Lamoreaux pitched 2.0 innings in relief, then Ethan Matthews pitched 2/3 of an inning, and then Gregory Inserillo pitched an inning.
Kaiden Cannistra was 2-3 with two RBI. Jacob Falero went 2-3 with a double and a triple, two RBI, and two runs. Santino Michitti also added a double and an RBI. Carmelo Alessandro hit a double and Zechariah Clouston and Nicky Rubio-Reyes also had an RBI.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 3, Herkimer 13
The Hornets got off to a quick start with three runs in the top of the 1st thanks to a walk, an error, a hit by pitch, a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly, and a single. But just as quickly as the Hornets plated three, the Generals plated four in the bottom of the 1st. Herkimer used two doubles, three singles, an intentional walk, and multiple stolen bases to take the early lead. Herkimer then broke the game open in the bottom of the 3rd with eight runs and added an insurance run in the 4th before shutting the Hornets down in the 5th.
Brady Mazur started the contest for SUNY Broome and dealt 2.1 innings, allowing seven hits and seven earned runs, striking out three. Blair also pitched in relief, as did Bailey O'Connor for an inning, and Vernon Stevens for a scoreless 2/3 of an inning.
Alessandro had another productive game with two more hits and an RBI. Michitti, Manuel Paulino, and Cade Raleigh also added hits. Falero drew two walks and scored a run.
