Baseball Drops Twinbill At #5 Hudson Valley

The SUNY Broome baseball team suffered a sweep of a doubleheader with undefeated and nationally-ranked #5 Hudson Valley CC on Thursday.
The Hornets lost the first leg 15-3 in five innings and dropped the second 10-2 in seven innings. Hudson Valley improved to an unblemished 10-0 on the season while SUNY Broome fell to 2-6.
The two teams were initially scheduled to finish up a four-game stretch against each other with another doubleheader on Saturday, but that has been postponed due to weather and rescheduled for April 14. Instead, the Hornets will now shift their attention toward Sunday's home opener, a doubleheader vs the nationally-ranked #13 Cayuga Spartans with expected first pitch times of 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 3, #5 Hudson Valley 15
The Vikings scored early and often, needing just five innings to defeat the visiting Hornets. Hudson Valley started off with a 6 spot in the bottom of the 1st. Despite an answer from SUNY Broome with three runs in the top of the 3rd, the Vikings added four runs in the bottom of the 3rd and five runs in the bottom of the 4th. Hudson Valley had nine hits and capitalized on two SUNY Broome errors in the win.
Zechariah Clouston was the starting pitcher for the Hornets and the Vikings' bats got to him early. Clouston allowed six hits and six earned runs while facing 10 batters across one inning. Two Vikings took Clouston deep in the inning.
Ethan Flagg dealt the next 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on five walks and two strikeouts. Evan Persbacker pitched 1/3 of an inning and allowed a homer but logged a strikeout. Vernon Stevens relieved 2/3 of an inning, allowing five unearned runs. Hunter Thornton was the final reliever brought into the contest for SUNY Broome and pitched a clean 1/3 of an inning.
Offensively, the Hornets registered four hits en route to their three runs. All four hits came from the Hornets' first three hitters in the lineup.
Jacob Falero was 1-3 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot. Darlyn De Los Angeles also went 1-3 with a run scored. Santino Michitti did the damage by going 2-2 with two doubles and two RBI.
SUNY Broome drew two walks in the contest, one each by Carmelo Alessandro and Peter Cruz, but fell victim to the strikeout nine times. Cruz also scored a run.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 2, #5 Hudson Valley 10
Hudson Valley scored twice in the bottom of the 1st and put up a 7 spot in the bottom of the 3rd. SUNY Broome scored twice in the top of the 5th, but then the Vikings added another run in the 6th before closing it out in the top of the 7th. The second and third innings were scoreless. Hudson Valley outhit SUNY Broome 9-3 and registered 10 stolen bases. The Hornets committed two errors in the contest.
The Hornets again pitched by committee in this contest. Michitti was the starter and went one inning, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. Thornton pitched the next inning and gave up a hit and a walk but did not allow a run. Ethan Matthews went 1/3 of an inning and allowed four runs on two hits and two walks. Persbacker pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed two runs (one earned). The final three innings were absorbed by Bailey O'Connor who had an effective outing with no walks and two strikeouts.
Falero logged another hit and stole a base. Alessandro had a double and a stolen base. Thomas Reis Jr. had the third SUNY Broome hit. Landon Hepditch and Brady Mazur scored a run. Hepditch, Michitti, and Emmanuel Aponte-Cardozo all drew a walk. Mazur drew two.
