The SUNY Broome baseball team finished a four-game stretch with Mohawk Valley in a span of four days by taking one of two games in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
The Hornets achieved a split of a doubleheader vs Mohawk Valley on Saturday the 21st. After two days off in between, the teams met again on Tuesday and split that doubleheader. SUNY Broome won the first leg 7-3 and Mohawk Valley captured the second game 13-3 in six innings due to a 10-run advantage.
Tuesday's games were credited as SUNY Broome's home games, but were played at Mohawk Valley's turf facility due to weather.
After the two doubleheaders, the Hornets and Hawks have now split their regular season series of four games, 2-2.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 7, Mohawk Valley 3
Mohawk Valley was able to strike first against the Hornets with a 2 spot in the top of the 1st. SUNY Broome responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to push ahead. The Hornets added two more in the bottom of the second. Mohawk Valley tightened the score to 5-3 in the top of the 5th, but SUNY Broome found some insurance runs in the bottom half to strengthen its lead to 7-3.
Peter Cruz shoved a complete game for the Hornets, earning his first win of the young season. Over 7.0 innings, he allowed seven hits, three runs, three walks, and struck out four.
The top of the Hornets' lineup did some heaving lifting as the first three hitters combined for six hits. Leadoff man Kaiden Cannistra was 3-4 with a double and a triple. He added an RBI and scored two runs. Darlyn De Los Angeles had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Santino Michitti was 2-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.
Thomas Reis Jr. added a double and a walk and an RBI. Bailey O'Connor was 1-3 with two RBI.
Several Hornets walked and subsequently scored a run, such as Zechariah Clouston, Cade Raleigh, and Nicky Rubio-Reyes. Jacob Falero had a stolen base.
SUNY Broome narrowly outhit Mohawk Valley 8-7 in the win.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 3, Mohawk Valley 13
SUNY Broome was facing a minor 2-1 deficit heading into the top of the 4th when Mohawk Valley struck for nine runs in the half-inning. The Hawks were walked three times, hit three triples, and also benefitted from three SUNY Broome errors. The teams were even after that, each scoring two runs throughout the rest of the contest, but the damage had been done with the Hawks' explosion during their turn batting in the 4th.
Luke Grassi started with a strong 3.0 innings, allowing one earned run and three walks while striking out seven. He now has a combined 13 strikeouts in his last two appearances.
Brady Mazur was called upon for a relief outing in the 4th and while he allowed eight runs, none of them were earned since the Hornets made three errors while he was on the bump. He lasted 2/3 of the inning and walked two while striking out one. Evan Persbacker finished the final 1/3 of the inning allowing two hits, one run, and one walk.
Reis Jr. pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit, one earned one, walking none, and striking out two.
Cannistra was at the top of the Hornets' lineup again with a 3-3 game which included an RBI and a run. Michitti was 2-2 with two doubles and an RBI. Raleigh had a productive game with a hit, a sacrifice fly, and a walk. Falero and Carmelo Alessandro had the two other SUNY Broome hits.
The Hornets and Hawks were even in the hits category with 8 apiece, but a key difference was the fact that SUNY Broome committed five errors and Mohawk Valley had a clean sheet of fielding.
The Hornets now sit at 2-4 on the season following the split. Looking ahead, the team will play its next four games against nationally-ranked #5 Hudson Valley CC. The Hornets will be away for a doubleheader on Thursday, and home for a doubleheader on Saturday.
