The SUNY Broome baseball team scored six runs in the top of the 7th to secure a 7-5 comeback win in game two of a doubleheader at Jefferson CC on Saturday, sweeping the twinbill.
The Hornets were dominant in an 8-3 win in the first game of the sweep.
SUNY Broome improved to 4-10 on the season with the two wins.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 8, Jefferson 3
The visiting Hornets did all their damage in the first three innings of the opening contest, plating one run in the 1st, four in the 2nd, and three in the 3rd. A strong combination of pitching and defense survived one run in each of the 2nd, 4th, and 7th innings by Jefferson.
Peter Cruz collected his second complete-game win of the season in an excellent performance. Over 7.0 innings, he yielded just five hits, two earned runs, and two walks, while striking out five.
NJCAA Region 3's top hitter, Kaiden Cannistra, set the offensive tone for the Hornets from the leadoff spot with a double, three RBI, and a run scored. Jacob Falero was 1-3 with two RBI. Cade Raleigh had a hit, an RBI, and two runs. Santino Michitti had an RBI.
Carmelo Alessandro was 2-3 with a double and two runs. Thomas Reis Jr. was also 2-3 with a double and two runs. Darlyn De Los Angeles also picked up a hit as the Hornets had eight total in the game. SUNY Broome also stole eight bases in the win.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 7, Jefferson 5
Jefferson took an early lead in the second contest with two runs in the 1st and two runs in the 3rd. SUNY Broome was held scoreless for the first four innings before finally getting on the board with a run in the 5th, but still trailed 4-1 entering the final inning of play.
Then the Hornets had a remarkable top of the 7th, exploding for six runs to take a 7-4 lead. SUNY Broome scored its six runs before the Cannoneers managed to record the second out of the inning.
After two walks, the Hornets executed a double steal where the runner at first base stole second and then the runner at third base stole home on the throw down to second. Immediately after, a De Los Angeles single plated the runner from second and the Hornets trimmed the deficit to one. Another steal and a dropped third strike put runners at first and second with just one out, and then the bases were loaded on a hit-by-pitch. Alessandro then drew a walk to even the game at 4-4 and then Raleigh singled in two to put SUNY Broome ahead. While Alessandro was at third and Raleigh was at first, Raleigh stole second and an error by the Jefferson catcher allowed Alessandro to come home and give the Hornets their sixth run of the inning.
While the Cannoneers plated a run in the bottom of the 7th, the Hornets managed to hang on and win.
It was a tale of two complete games for the Hornets' pitching staff as Luke Grassi earned his first win of the season by pitching the entire contest. Over 7.0 innings he surrendered five hits, four earned runs, and five walks, striking out seven.
Cannistra added two more hits, as did Zechariah Clouston. De Los Angeles, Michitti, Alessandro, and Raleigh all had at least one RBI in the win. The Hornets registered eight hits for the second straight game and stole seven bases.
