Baseball Falls At #13 Cayuga

The SUNY Broome baseball team visited nationally-ranked #13 Cayuga CC for a doubleheader on Thursday and was defeated in both games.
Both games went final after five innings due to Cayuga holding at least a 10-run advantage. The first contest went final in the bottom of the 5th when Cayuga scored two runs to win 10-0. The second leg ended in the 5th with a final of 20-2.
The Hornets' two most recent schedule dates have been doubleheaders with Cayuga, as the teams also met for two games at SUNY Broome last weekend. Suffering a sweep on both occasions, the Hornets will finish 0-4 against Cayuga in their regular season meetings.
SUNY Broome falls to 2-10 on the season with a Region 3 record of 2-8 and a Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) record of 0-4. The Hornets will be back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader with another MSAC opponent in Jefferson CC. The twinbill is at Jefferson with first pitch times scheduled for 12:00 pm (Noon) and 2:00 pm.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 0, #13 Cayuga 10
After a scoreless first inning, Cayuga opened the scoring in a big way with five runs in the bottom of the 2nd. The Spartans scored in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th as well and held the Hornets without a run throughout. After one run in the 3rd and two in the fifth to go up 8-0, Cayuga walked off the game with two runs in the bottom of the 5th to enact the 10-run rule.
Not only did Cayuga hold SUNY Broome without a run, the Spartans' starting pitcher also went all five innings to no-hit the Hornets in the contest.
Brady Blair was on the bump to start for SUNY Broome and he went 1.2 innings, with four hits, five runs, five walks, and a strikeout. Ethan Flagg pitched the next 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while walking three and striking out none.
Ethan Matthews pitched a scoreless 1/3 of an inning and logged a strikeout. Hunter Thornton allowed two hits and an earned run over 1/3 of an inning.
SUNY Broome did not register any hits in the opening game but drew three walks. Kaiden Cannistra, Darlyn De Los Angeles, and Bailey O'Connor were the beneficiaries of those walks.
The Hornets surrendered nine hits to Cayuga and committed two errors.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 2, #13 Cayuga 20
The Hornets got on the board first with a run in the top of the 1st, but then Cayuga answered with a monster bottom of the 1st in which 10 runs were plated. SUNY Broome scored again in the 2nd, but Cayuga added three runs in its turn at bat. Then the Spartans scored seven in the 3rd to increase their lead to 20-2, which is what the score remained through the 4th and the top of the 5th when Cayuga closed the door on the Hornets.
Cannistra was the starting pitcher for SUNY Broome in the second game and did not record an out in the first inning, allowing five runs on five walks. Zechariah Clouston pitched the rest of the first inning, allowing five additional runs on four hits.
O'Connor then went an inning in relief and allowed three runs on two hits and four walks. Alex Lamoreaux pitched 2/3 of an inning and surrendered five hits and seven unearned runs. He had two walks and one strikeout. Flagg made another relief appearance in the doubleheader and delivered 1.1 innings of scoreless ball on three strikeouts in game two.
SUNY Broome logged three hits in the second game. De Los Angeles was 1-2. Carmelo Alessandro was 1-1 with a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base. Nicholas Malinovsky was 1-1. Santino Michitti and Emerson Toulson each had an RBI. Luke Grassi scored a run and drew a walk. Matthews also drew a walk.
SUNY Broome pitchers allowed 12 Cayuga hits and the Hornets committed an error in the field.
