The men's basketball team lost a highly-contested battle late in the second half at Onondaga CC, falling 94-89.
SUNY Broome visited the Onondaga Lazers on January 21. Coming into the matchup, the Hornets were 4-6 overall and 3-1 in Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) play while the Lazers were 10-6 overall and undefeated at 4-0 in conference play.
The two teams traded baskets for the beginning stretch of the first half, before Onondaga had a brief four-point lead. Later in the contest at the 12:48 mark in the first, SUNY Broome began a 10-0 run that put the Hornets up 23-16. The Hornet lead blossomed to a 10-point advantage with five minutes left in the first, but then a 12-2 run by the Lazers over the final 3:30 of the half put Onondaga back in front by one at halftime, 41-40.
The Hornets faced another early hole to begin the second half, trailing 46-40. After a brief Hornets comeback, Onondaga still remained ahead by five, 50-45 at the 17:23 mark. SUNY Broome tied the contest at 52-52 at the 15:24 mark, and then took a 55-52 lead at the 14:48 mark of the second. SUNY Broome quickly extended its lead to eight points, but Onondaga clawed back to eventually even the score at 65-65. SUNY Broome regained the lead and extended it to six points. Onondaga later tied the contest again, this time at 77-77 with 5:33 to go.
Within the last five minutes of the contest, there were several ties and lead changes. SUNY Broome held an 85-80 lead with 3:30 left to play, before the Lazers jumped ahead 87-86. SUNY Broome went back ahead 88-87, but then Onondaga made one of two free throws to even the score. On the ensuing Hornets possession, SUNY Broome made one of two free throws to secure an 89-88 advantage with 1:29 left. Onondaga missed a layup following the missed SUNY Broome free throw, but the Hornets committed a turnover with 40 seconds remaining upon getting the ball back. Following a timeout, Onondaga made a layup with 29 seconds left to push ahead 90-89. Another Hornets turnover with 17 seconds to go led to another Onondaga layup and a 92-89 lead.
With 13 seconds to go, the Hornets called a timeout to draw up a play. A game-tying attempt missed, but SUNY Broome corralled the offensive rebound to set up a second game-tying look, which was also off the mark. Onondaga was fouled after securing the defensive rebound, and knocked down both free throws to put the game away for the 94-89 final.
Dejon Williams finished the contest with a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds. Ponce Williams also scored 21 points. Tyrell Davender logged 13 points off the bench while Isaiah Sanders had nine and Braeden Davis had seven.
SUNY Broome fell to 4-7 overall and 3-2 in conference with the loss.
