The men's basketball team fell just short of upsetting nationally-ranked #6 Northampton CC in a 59-51 loss on Thursday night.
The defensive effort by both teams was the story of this contest as each school was held below a 31% field goal percentage and combined to force 45 total turnovers. Specifically, SUNY Broome shot 30.2% from the floor and turned it over 24 times while Northampton shot just 26.9% from the floor and committed 21 turnovers.
SUNY Broome managed to go step for step for the entirety of the contest with #6 Northampton in the Spartans' home gymnasium. The Hornets trailed just 36-27 at halftime and then outscored the Spartans 24-23 in a second half where buckets were especially hard to come by.
Despite shooting a lower percentage at the line than SUNY Broome, Northampton was able to make 10 more free throws than the Hornets in one of the few statistical disparities in the contest. SUNY Broome shot 71.4% from the free throw line but had just 14 attempts, and therefore made 10. Northampton had 36 attempts and made 20 of them for a 55.6% clip. The only two other categories in which SUNY Broome was at a clear disadvantage were fouls committed (the Hornets committed eight more fouls which helped Northampton attempt 22 more free throws) and rebounds (the Hornets were outrebounded 56-46).
Only three players in the contest scored in double figures, all from Northampton. Three Hornets tied for a team-high in points with seven: Dejon Williams, Isaiah Sanders, and Tyrell Davender. Williams also led the team with 11 rebounds. Davender had eight.
Nine different Hornets scored points compared to eight different Spartans, but SUNY Broome couldn't find enough points overall to pull off the great upset bid.
The team will take a 3-4 record into its next game at home on December 6 vs nationally-ranked #1 Mohawk Valley CC.
