The women's soccer team picked up their second consecutive win on Wednesday afternoon in Watertown against MSAC rival Jefferson CC, 2-1 in OT. The Hornets outshot the Cannoneers 11-2 in the first half but couldn't net the go ahead goal. After a hard fought half both teams went to the locker room tied at 0-0.
Just 1:35 into the second half the Hornets Captain, Dana Stepp, received a crossed ball from Quinn Miller and promptly buried the ball from the top of the box into the lower right corner giving the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Broome held the lead until the 78th minute when the Cannoneers Josie Barton was fouled in their attacking half. Barton sent a soaring free kick over goalkeeper Kayla Wyckoff to knot the score. Regulation ended 1-1 with the Hornets dominating play but not able to get the go ahead goal.
In the first "golden goal" overtime, with only 2:28 off the 10 minute overtime clock, Captain Luccia Martucci gathered in a crossed pass from defender Ella Stafford to net the game winner. Martucci's first goal of the season from her defensive position was a welcome end to a well played match. The tough, consistent play of the defense continued to be a factor in the young season.
Broome returns to Alumni Field this Sunday for a Region III matchup against Fulton Montgomery CC at 1:00 P.M.
