Schiff And Gray-Motto Shine For Hornets At Cortland Classic

Ava Schiff and Khala Gray-Motto were integral parts of a successful performance for women's track & field at the Cortland Classic on April 18 and 19.
Schiff competed for points toward the 2025 NJCAA Division III Region III Championships, which well be held later this season in Little Falls, NY. Schiff competed in the heptathlon, a series of seven events over two days, earning 2,264 total points. This point total placed Schiff 11th overall and 1st among Region III athletes. Thus, Schiff was crowned the 2025 NJCAA Region III champion in the women's heptathlon.
Gray-Motto was another key ingredient of the Hornets' successful weekend. She competed in three events and placed in the top 10 in each one, breaking two school records in the process. Gray-Motto threw 25.98 meters in the javelin to set a new school record in the event and place 7th overall. Next, she tied her own record of 5.47 meters in the long jump and placed 4th in the event. Finally, Gray-Motto ran 12.67 seconds in the women's 100 meter dash. With this time, she shattered the previous school record by over a second and finished 10th overall. She qualified for Nationals in all three events.
Carly Hein, who had already qualified for Nationals in both the triple jump and the long jump, placed 10th and 12th in those respective events. In the triple jump, she registered a distance of 9.89 meters. In the long jump, she registered a distance of 4.73 meters.
Riley Precourt also competed in the long jump and the 100 meter dash, jumping 3.93 meters and running 14.69 seconds. Additionally, she ran 30.90 seconds in the 200 meter and 1:14.99 in the 400 meter.
The women's throwers continued to shine at the invite. Chayse McRae, Hannah Sanford, and Gabriella Vazquez each competed in the shot put. All three throwers either tied or beat their personal bests. McRae finished with a distance of 4.72 meters, followed by Sanford with 6.84 meters, and Vazquez with 8.79 meters. In the discus, Vazquez threw 26.98 meters.
