SUNY Broome took one of two games from Corning at home on Wednesday, April 30.
The Hornets lost their 4-1 lead and allowed a 9-run inning in the opening game, eventually dropping the contest 13-5. SUNY Broome responded, however, with a 6-run inning of their own in the second contest to earn a split after a 12-5 win.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 5, Corning CC 13
The Hornets took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st after an RBI single from Santino Michitti. Corning answered in the top of the 2nd, but then Broome went back ahead 4-1 in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to a two-RBI double by Michitti and a Red Barons error.
Corning turned the game around in the 4th by plating nine runs on six hits and taking a 10-4 lead. While the Hornets struck for another run in the 6th on a walk by Jason Kithcart Jr. with the bases loaded, the home team could not complete the comeback.
Michitti went 3-4 with three RBIs and accounted for three of the Hornets' seven hits in the contest. Connor Normile Jr. was 2-2 and Carmelo Alessandro and Nathan Moses also picked up one hit each.
Zechariah Clouston started the game for the Hornets and allowed just one run over 2.0 innings, but exited after walking seven. Moses, Michitti, and Evan Persbacker followed in relief.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 12, Corning CC 5
The second leg of the doubleheader featured scoring early and often. Corning opened with two runs in the top of the 1st. Broome responded and cut the deficit to 2-1 after a sacrifice fly by Alessandro. The Red Barons scored again in the top of the 2nd but Broome answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Normile Jr. scored on a wild pitch, then Clouston scored on a balk, then Michitti had an RBI single. The Hornets' 4-3 lead was short-lived as Corning scored two runs in the top of the 3rd to go back ahead.
Normile Jr., Nicholas Ragonese, and Jacob McTigue all had doubles in the bottom of the 5th when the Hornets struck for six runs. Ragonese plated three runs on his double, McTigue plated two runs on his, and Normile Jr. drove in one on his. Ragonese and Normile Jr. added some insurance for Broome in the 6th.
Michitti batted 2-3 in the contest, Ragonese was 1-4 with four RBIs, and Normile Jr. was 2-3.
Joseph Chermak started the game and allowed four earned runs over 3.0 innings. Evan Persbacker notched his first win of the season by pitching 3.0 scoreless innings in relief.
